Media Hint goes premium – And how to keep using it for free

US TV Channels

If you are only interested in how to keep using Media Hint for free scroll to the bottom of the post.

Back in 2012 I subscribed to a Swedish newspaper called Computer Sweden, well actually I still do. Anyway in November 2012 this newspaper published a short article called “Hack gives more movies on Netflix” . It told the story of a plugin for Firefox and Chrome that had come to life during Garage 48 in Riga. This plugin allowed you to fool the Netflix servers that you where not in Sweden (or wherever you may be) but in the United States and thereby gain access to more content. Great, however I didn’t have Netflix so it didn’t really effect me but since I am interested in this kind of thing I kept reading. And I am glad I did because later on in the article it explained that the plugin also works on Hulu and Pandora, this made me curious and I decided to try it out. Since I understood that this must be using some kind of proxy I didn’t have much hope for it being any good, every free alternative I had tried up to this point was very slow and just kept buffering all the time. To my surprise it was good, it was actually very good and I didn’t have any buffering problems at all. Since that day all of my desktop browsers have Media Hint installed, I don’t use it very often but when I need it it is always there.

Today Media Hint allows you to unlock a lot of different services and not just Netflix, Hulu and Pandora.  If you can think of a US based channel which blocks the rest of the world Media Hint will most likely unblock it. But it doesn’t stop there, the thing I use Media Hint for the most is to unblock the British BBC iPlayer, I even have XBMC set up to use media hint servers for this. (I will post how to set this up later) .  I also just noted that the service now includes a Japanese proxy, not sure what site(s) it unblocks thou.

And now to the sad news. Since April 1st 2014  Media Hint is no longer a free service. You get a 7 day free trial but then you have o pay a monthly or yearly fee to keep using the service.  Now while I am all for the guys over at Media Hint getting paid for their work $3.95/month seems a little to much considering I only use it about once or twice a month. So here is the good part, there are a couple of ways to still use it for free.

1. Use an old version

The first way of  getting Media Hint for free is to use an old version of the plugin. Yea thats right, the way Media Hint currently works they can not block the old versions without blocking the new ones as well, it would however be a quick fix and it will probably not work for long. Also remember to disable automatic updates for the plugin or it will just update to the new one.  For Firefox installing old versions is quite easy considering you can still download them from the official Media Hint addon page. When it comes to Chrome it gets a little trickier since the chrome web store only allows you to download the current version of the extensions. But don’t worry, a quick search on google showed that softpedia still hosts an old version you can download. It may have been updated by the time you are reading this thou.

2. Create new trial accounts

The second way is to simply keep creating new trial accounts. At the time of me writing this there actually is nothing in the Media Hint ToS that says you are not allowed to have multiple accounts, or even that you can not create them automatically.  With that in mind I went ahead and created a simple userscript that automaticly creates and signs you in to a new account when you visit When your trial expires simply sign out and it will do it again. Just keep in mind that Media Hint may change the ToS at any time and in some countries breaking the ToS of a service is illegal so make sure to check the Media Hint Terms of Service before using it.

3. Crack the plugin

This one I am mentioning only because I have seen it suggested on several sites and I want to advice against it. The fact that Chrome Extensions is basically a zip file with JavaScript in it suggests that it would be very easy to crack even for novice programmers. However this would most certainly be illegal and I am not going to show you how to do it and as I said earlier I advice against it.

I hope this post has helped you and if you do use the service a lot you should really consider paying for it, running those proxy servers can’t be cheap.

After a short discussion with a guy called marius in the comment field over at I have been looking into the code of the chrome extension and I think I might have found another alternative that exists due to a bug in the way that the plugins checks if you are signed in to and if you are premium. I have been testing this and it seems to work for now but should you try it and it doesn’t work please let me know and I will run some more tests.

4. Never turn off the plugin

This might not work in firefox, I have not tried it but at least in chrome there seem to be a bug that allows you to keep using the extension even after the trial period. All you have to remember is to never turn off the extension, it does however not care if you disable it so should you for some reason need to turn it off just disable it instead. Now the extension seem to react to when you sign in and out at so a good idea would be to just erase the cookies for as soon as you have turned the extension on, that way they can not mess anything up. I am not sure if they would any way but better safe then sorry right.

I think I might be sick

This will just be a quick update.

In short, I think I might be sick, I am sitting and doing some work on a PHP project and just caught myself thinking,

This would have been so much easier in java

Something most be horribly wrong when I start to think like that, I don’t even like java. I have never liked java. Java is the work of the devil.

Oh well, I guess I might have started to like it more and more after all these hours spent on the TV box project at school. Goddammit

Here we go again

One again I am going to try and do something that I have failed with time and time again before, I am going to something as chocking as writing about my own life on my personal blog. I know it must sound like the easiest thing in the world for a lot of you guys but for me it isn’t simply because I don’t read other peoples blogs about themselves and don’t really see the point in doing so. But at the same time I think it might be a good way of getting sort of a flow going on the blog and not have one post and then wait a couple of months before the next one. Also it will be a good way for me to improve my wring skills. To be honest I don’t really think they are that good right now. And if you don’t like it, well then just skip the posts in the category Popeens life. When I get time I will make sure to get a button on the front page of the blog that you can use to remove all the “Popeens Life” posts.

So lets get started, those of you who know me outside of just the handle Popeen knows that I am studying System Science at Linköping University. What you might not know is that I am currently taking a course where we are developing a system for a TV box for a company called Zenterio. Now there is no guarantee that Zenterio will actually use our system but if they like our product they might use bits and pieces of it in a new system they are working on, fun right.

Yea it is actually very fun but unfortunately also takes up a lot of time, meaning that we sometimes have to work on weekends. As tomorrow, instead of having a nice long sleep in I am going to head over to campus to work on this project. But hey, its fun so I really don’t mind :)

The way this course is laid out is a little bit different then what I am used to but it is definitely a good concept. How it works is the class is divided into “companies” that are going to develop their separate products. The company has about 30 students and functions (almost) as a real company with different roles and responsibilities, and being a the web-guy I am I do of course have the role of GUI developer meaning that I am one of the (2) guys responsible for the GUI.

The one problem for me with this project is that the system is written in Java using Googles framework GWT. My experience in java is not that good and my experience in GWT is or at least was zero. I would have preferred us using PHP and JavaScript instead but hey you don’t always get what you want and honestly right now I am actually glad that we went with Java instead of PHP, not that I think Java is the better choice but I do think that this has forced me to work even more with Java and thus expanding my experience. To be honest I am actually starting to like Java more and more and have started using it for some of my private tools as well, some of which might end up for download here at some point.

Well that will have to be it for now because I have to head of to dreamland so that I can get up in time tomorrow.

Oh yea one more thing, since the type of blogs where you write about yourself seems to often have a lot of posts about the daily outfit I might as well show you a t-shirt I found on ebay today when I was browsing around looking for basically nothing. It is a little geeky but hey, so am I so it’s a perfect fit :)

Popeen goes scambaiting

Recently I have started with a new hobby or as some people call it, sport.
The sport is scambaiting and the main goal of it is to take as much time as possible from the scammers by simply scamming them back. There are several sites on scambaiting availiable but the biggest one and the one I am using is called 419 Eater or simply eater.

If you have some time over it is definitely something I can recommend because it is just so much fun and it feels very good to know that every minute the scammer spends on me is a minute he can not spend on a “real” victim. BUT and this is important, if you are going to start  baiting it is extremely important that you read the guidelines and bait safely.

Even if you don’t want to start with baiting yourself it is very easy to lose a lot of hours on the site just reading other peoples baits, which is how I got started

On the frontpage of eater you can read the following text that briefly explains what scambaiting and eater is about.

Does somebody want to transfer millions of dollars into your account?
Does someone want to pay you to cash cheques and send them the money?
Met a new friend/penpal on a friendship/dating site who’s asking you for money?
Has a dying person contacted you wanting your help to give his money to charity?
Have you sold an item and are asked to accept a payment larger than the item amount?

Don’t fall for common scams like this – fight them!

So what is scambaiting? Well, put simply, you enter into a dialogue with scammers, simply to waste their time and resources. Whilst you are doing this, you will be helping to keep the scammers away from real potential victims and screwing around with the minds of deserving thieves.

It doesn’t matter if you are new to this sport or a hardened veteran; if you are wasting the time of a scammer, or frustrating them in any way well that’s good enough for us, and we would welcome you to join with our now very large community.

Although this site concentrates mainly on the Nigerian 419 scam, we are happy to deal with other types of scams if and when the opportunity arises. We also have a large team of experts dedicated to the removal and closure of fake scammer banks and sites.

Even if you are a newcomer, much fun can be had and at the same time you will be doing a public service. If you are new to this game and need to know what scambaiting is all about, please click on the 419 FAQ link at the top of the page. See also Baiting Tips for information on getting started on this great cyber-sport

We encourage everyone to contribute to this site and the good cause of scambaiting by joining in the fun on the FORUM where you can meet new friends and seek expert help, tips and advice on anti-scamming. User participation is absolutely encouraged. Please help us to raise awareness the world over!

Do not be fooled into thinking scammers operate from a specific part of the world. Advance fee fraud scammers are a world-wide menace, and they operate from every continent. These scammers range from small one-man-band criminals scamming a few thousand dollars a year, to highly organised groups raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.

Minecraft Mods

So, to start of this brand new blog before that smell of new bits and bytes dissapears I would like to tell you a little about a couple of minecraft mods that I am currently working on. Two of them don’t make that much of a difference in the game and will most likely not do it in the future either but the third one I have great hopes for.  Before we start talking about the mods I just want to tell you a little about Kakadua thou.

Well, first of kakadua is the swedish word for Cockatoo and it is also the name that I and my friend Primycha use when we do stuff together. When it comes to the stuff I work on alone sometimes they will be published under my personal brand and sometimes under kakadua depending on what they are. For example any minecraft mod I make will be published under kakadua and any classes, snippets or other code I publish will be under popeen

With that said I think it is time to start talking about those mods that this post is really about.

You will always be able to find all our latest minecraft mods over at our minecraft mod page.

1.  Kakadua Enderglasses

The enderglasses mod is a very small mod and all it does is adding the enderglasses into the game, these glasses works similar to having a pumkin on your head in that endermen will not attack you while wearing them. Wearing normal enderglasses will make everything look green kind of like a pair of sunglasses makes everyhing darker while wearing the clear enderglasses  will have no such effect. On slow computers or while playing on a server this overlay can get quite “flimmery”, if that happens you can turn the green overlay of in the mods config file. The mod is updated for the current release (1.6.2) and works on both SSP and SMP but in can be a little unstable on SMP, we have had no problems with corrupted worlds but make sure to have a fresh backup just in case. It needs to be installed on the server aswell for it to work.

You can find the enderglasses mod here

2. Display Biome Mod

The display biome mod is an extremely simple mod and all it does is adding the name of the biome to the top left of the screen. Not very usefull when playing vanilla perhaps but its great when learning to play with mods that add lots of new biomes. I got the idea for the mod when we started playing with Biomes O’ Plenty on our private server. The mod is updated to the current version (1.6.2) and works on both SSP and SMP. It does not need to be installed on the server.

You can find the Display Biome Mod here

3. Zombie Infection

zombieInfection zombieInfectionPic1

Zombie infection is a mod that I have great hopes for, currently all it does is spawn an undead version of yourself when you get killed by a zombie or another undead player. When this zombie gets killed there is a small chans that it will drop your skull.

I have big plans for this mod in the future but I dont really want to give anything away this early so I will just say, it is going to be awsome :)
The mod works on both SSP and SMP. It needs to be installed on the server aswell for it to work.

You can find a very early alpha version of Zombie Infection here

That is pretty much it when it comes to the mods and if you have ideas or suggestions feel free to comment on this post or send me an email about it.

Today I was helping a friend of mine that just bought a new computer to set it up. Since it was a OEM computer the Windows on it offcource had a lot of crap pre installed. Since I only poses a original disc for Ultimate I started searching for an untouched version of Home Premium online. And I must say that I was very pleased with what I found. A blog called Zhacks had written a post about just that a while ago that was filled with links to untouched original isos. So here you go.

Most if not all software are being sold online where the user can pay using their credit card or paypal and when the transaction is completed, they will be able to download the full version or being provided with the license key to convert the trial into an activated full version. As for Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft doesn’t sell it online and the only reason why there are original and official Windows 7 installation ISO that can be downloaded on the Internet is because of some web-based online storefronts and retailers such as Digital River sell Windows 7 licenses.

Here is a compiled list of Windows 7 direct download links which are in ISO format that can be either extracted, burned to a DVD or loaded into a virtual machine. Do note that you will need a genuine product key to activate Windows 7 or else it will run in a time limited trial.

Windows 7 Professional x64 (64-bit)

Windows 7 Professional x86 (32-bit)

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (64-bit)

Windows 7 Home Premium x86 (32-bit)

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (64-bit)

Windows 7 Ultimate x86 (32-bit)

Windows 7 Home Premium N x86 (32-bit)

Windows 7 Home Premium N x64 (64-bit)

Windows 7 Professional N x86 (32-bit)

Windows 7 Professional N x64 (64-bit)

The Digital River’s file servers are really fast and should easily maxed out your download speed.

Blogspot doesn’t really have ads, instead they have this annoying bar at the top of the page witch doesn’t look that good
After several people asking me how to remove it with JavaScript I took a look at it and wrote this script. What it does is it simply just hides the bar. I haven’t read the ToS of blogspot so I don’t know if its against the rules. Use it at your own risk.

1. Copy this script
2. Paste it above “<div class=’body-fauxcolumns’>” in your design
3. Done!
